Challenges

This project developed from the client’s desire for an application that would help and simplify the process of reading and studying the catechism. The main goal of the project was to facilitate and reduce the time of finding related paragraphs. Traditionally, when reading the catechism, additional numbers are listed next to certain passages, indicating that some other passages also cover the same topic as the current passage. Prior to the development of applications, this process was lengthy and required the user to manually search the text to identify all relevant passages.

Solution

As a solution to this challenge, an application that recognizes speech was developed. When the user says the additional number listed next to the text paragraph, the application recognizes it and displays the requested paragraph on the screen. Using this application significantly simplifies the process of searching for passages, and allows the user to continue reading the catechism without any interruptions. The application uses the scripting programming language JavaScript for speech recognition, and it needs permission to use the microphone to work. After the user says the key word, that is, the number, the application does what it was assigned to do, and after that it only listens passively. The application is currently optimized in three languages – English, Croatian and Hungarian, but if necessary it can be upgraded to more languages supported by JavaScript.
